Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Pennsylvania House Bill 944

What farming methodologies do you think should be included in agricultural education in PA?

The Pennsylvania House of Representative’s Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee unanimously adopted a proposal by Rep. Mark Keller (R-Perry) on June 19, 2017 that would “develop and disseminate agricultural education materials for school entities or private or nonpublic kindergartens, elementary or secondary schools in this Commonwealth.”

The proposal, House Bill 944, would create a Commission for Agricultural Education to be overseen by both the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Read More

Brazil Approves First Commercially Available GM Sugarcane

In December, 2016, Gustavo Leite, Sugarcane Technology Center (CTC) CEO, stated that the first variety of transgenic sugarcane would be released commercially in the first half of 2017.

Six months later, as reported by Reuters on June 8, 2017, it’s here.

Reuters also reports that the variety of genetically engineered sugarcane approved “is resistant to the insect Diatraea saccharalis, known locally as ‘broca-da-cana’ (cane borer)” and that this variety of GM cane contains the Bt gene widely used in other crops including corn, cotton, eggplant, potato and yet to be commercially available tomato and soybean. WE can’t let this PASS – Robert’s Bill to only have voluntary federal labeling standard

IT’S BACK! A Bill to preempt state GMO labeling!

GMO labeling activists were successful last year in avoiding the passage of the DARK Act through the Senate, but last week, Senate AG Committee Chair Pat Roberts (R- Kan) introduced a bill that would preempt Vermont and other states’ mandatory GMO labeling laws and replace them with a voluntary federal labeling standard.

If this bill passes through the Senate, we will be back at square one. Vermont’s bill will die and big food companies will continue to get away with keeping consumers in the DARK about the ingredients in their foods. Read More
